Enrollment
After you apply and are accepted into the HUSKY program, the next step is called enrollment. Health care coverage for HUSKY B (for children under 19 only) begins when you enroll your child in one of our health care options. Coverage for HUSKY A (for children and eligible parents, relative caregivers and pregnant women) starts as soon as your application is approved for HUSKY. In HUSKY A you and your child receive benefits through our regular Medicaid program until you pick one of our
health care options.
Keep in mind that, no matter which health care option you select, HUSKY health care benefits are the same.
When you enroll, HUSKY gives you the freedom to choose one of three participating managed health care plans (Aetna Better health, AmeriChoice by Unitedhealthcare, or Community Health Network of CT);or -- if you live in the Hartford, New Haven, Waterbury, or Windham areas and are in HUSKY A –– you can choose HUSKY Primary Care, as our primary care case management (PCCM) program is known.
Regardless of which health care option you choose in HUSKY coverage, you will have a Primary Care Provider (such as a doctor, nurse practitioner, or nurse midwife).
More information is in the
Health Care Options section below. Please note that you need to choose one health care option, and all family members need to belong to the same option.
Your managed health care plan, or your provider in the HUSKY Primary Care program, will coordinate your health care benefits.
- The first difference in HUSKY Primary Care is that the beneficiary ‘enrolls’ directly with a participating Primary Care Provider.
- In the case of a HUSKY managed health care plan, on the other hand, the beneficiary ‘enrolls’ with one of the three plans and then is assigned a Primary Care Provider, or keeps one’s current Primary Care Provider (as long as the PCP is enrolled in the plan).
- Regardless of whether the enrollee chooses HUSKY Primary Care or one of the three HUSKY managed health care plans, the actual health care benefits in the HUSKY A package are the same.
- Perhaps the easiest way to explain HUSKY Primary Care is that the Primary Care Provider has a greater role in serving the patient/HUSKY A beneficiary in terms of coordinating care. For example:
- Linking you with community resources and services you need
- Arranging transportation to appointments
- Setting up appointments with needed specialists
- Providing same or next day appointments for urgent care
- These and functions are otherwise done by the HUSKY managed health care plan, in conjunction with the Primary Care Provider. Under managed health care, the Primary Care Provider is involved in a lot of the same things as in HUSKY Primary Care, such as patient care, referrals to specialists, follow-up. A major difference is that in managed care, the health plan shares case management functions with the Primary Care Provider, and the health plan provides more of the ‘customer service’ functions such as appointment and transportation scheduling assistance, which under HUSKY Primary Care are the responsibility of the Primary Care Provider.
